I came into my position and drop downs were being used. It would be a definite change in the web culture at this point to back away from that concept.

Personally, as a developer, my decision to use menus that go beyond the main level items depends on the quantity of the menu related content, the client's desires/expectations, an information architecture that screams, "please use structure beyond one level", the creative concept for the site, and project time constraints.
